Herrestadsfjället II

Herrestadsfjället has two nature reserves that are adjacent to each other and can be considered as a single contiguous reserve. Together they cover almost 1,400 hectares of woodland, mountains, lakes and wet heaths and it is a popular outdoor area all year round. The word 'fjäll' comes from Norwegian.

For most of the 19th century, the area was largely unforested due to logging and grazing, and the rocky areas were largely covered with heather. At the end of the 19th century, forest was planted on the mountain. Today, most of the area is forested with mainly pine, but as it was an open landscape, there is no really old forest within the nature reserves.

The nature reserves are linked to Uddevalla town by the Åleslål trail, which starts in Kurveröd and goes to the Åleslån farm, which is also a nature school. There are also several other paths and trails within the nature reserves, including Bohusleden, which passes through both reserves.

The nature in both nature reserves invites you to go hiking, mushroom and berry picking, skiing and sport fishing. Fishing licenses are available in several of the lakes. On the mountain there are classic rest cabins such as Hällerstugan, Kärrestugan, Kölnestugan and Krokestugan. Another good resting place is "Kåtan" at the northern part of V Krokevattnet.

The old Åleslån farm has been running a nature school for schoolchildren in the municipality for many years. The landscape around the farm has largely been reopened and in summer there are grazing animals here.
