Description

Håcksvik church

Håcksvik's church is originally from the Middle Ages, but as the condition deteriorated, a new church was built in 1826. The new church was made of wood in neoclassical style and replaced the then red-painted, chip-clad church that was the parish church already during Catholic times.

About the church

The tower of Håckvik church has its own history, it may have originally been a protective tower when the old national border with Denmark for a time followed Stångån.

Inside the church you will find two altarpieces. The new altarpiece is made in neoclassical style and fits well with the rest of the interior. The old altarpiece was made in 1927 and is placed in the middle of the church with the baptismal font in front. The baptismal font is made of sandstone and was made in the 12th or 13th century.

There is a unique memorial in the church. When the 100th anniversary of the Uppsala meeting was celebrated in 1693, a commemorative document was sent out to all parishes in Sweden. Today there are two left, one of which hangs in Håcksvik church.

During the 1940s, the church was renovated and the remains of a young woman were found under the floor who was buried around the 17th century. No one knows who she is but there is an old legend about the bride who broke her neck on the way to her wedding, who knows maybe it's her?
