Church built in 1806

History

The first church in Åmål, first mentioned in 1379, was built at the mouth of the river which was an important trade and market place. A stone church, now owned by the community of Åmål and in profane use, was built here in 1669. After the big city fire in 1777 a new church was built in neo-classic style in 1801-06 on the hill north of the city center. What characterizes the church is that the tower is placed on the south long side.

Worth seeing inside

The church room is dominated by the paintings from 1933-39. The altar piece pictures “On the way to the eternal city” and are flanked by “You belong to God’s kingdom” and “Home from the first communion”. In the choir are angels carrying hymn number boards. On the organ loft is King David flanked by Swedish hymn poets. The medieval baptismal font of soapstone comes from the old church and is said to be from the 13th century.
