Description

A site with many migratory birds. Skrängstasjön is a plain lake with large reed beds in some parts. In several places, farmland runs down to the lake and in others the deciduous forest is dominant. In the northernmost part there are some marshy areas along the shore. The lake has a high flow, which means that the ice breaks up in early spring at the inlet and outlet. The bird season at Skrängsta Lake generally starts in mid-second half of March, when the earliest spring birds (whooper swan, starlings, lapwings, skylarks and rock pigeons) arrive. The fields around the lake generally become snow-free around mid-April. At this time of year, the number of resting and passing birds can be high. In the second half of April, the raptor migration reaches its maximum with vultures, hawks, blue jays and several falcon species, but also the occasional sea or golden eagle. In addition to resting ducks and waders and the sometimes fine bird of prey migration, it can be mentioned that in recent years the crane has been seen in increasing numbers (max 300 ex/day so far). A bit into May, the number of resting birds decreases quite quickly, but the number of species can still be high and with interesting species such as the Lesser Black-backed Gull and Lark Falcon and some years also the Great Snipe. After the spring migration has ended, the lake attracts nightingales. The best areas for this are on the western side of the lake, at Myre. Here, a marsh or grasshopper warbler is heard fairly regularly, sometimes also a shrub or river warbler. Water Rail and Small Spotted Crake are heard some years in the northern part of the lake. Among the breeding birds can be mentioned, for example, warbler (several pairs), and horned owl (some years). In recent years, brown harrier has also been added as a breeding bird. During the fall, Skrängstasjön is not as well visited, but ringing has shown that a lot of different passerines are resting, with species such as blue hawk and occasionally white sparrow. On certain days and in the right weather conditions, raptor migration can also be decent.
