Description
Mingen is of national interest as a nesting site for shorebirds and water birds. What makes the lake unique, together with Skrängstasjön, is that the lake is largely surrounded by arable land right down to the shoreline. This type of lake is extremely rare in northern Sweden. The lake is nutrient-rich and shallow, with large reed beds in some places, especially in the western and northern parts. In some parts, forest reaches the lake and in other areas farmland extends right down to the shore. Due to its low flow, Mingen becomes ice-free relatively late (early May). The lake is most interesting to visit from early May until midsummer. When the ice breaks up, several different species of dabbling ducks and grebes, for example, rest. Around mid-May, several different wader species are often seen. In some years, cranes can be seen on the northern stretch in fairly significant numbers. Several species of birds of prey also pass by. The breeding bird fauna offers species such as brown duck and brown harrier, possibly also water rail, moorhen and even gray partridge. Reed warblers and swifts are plentiful in the reeds. In the surroundings of Mingen breeds lark falcon, black-throated reed warbler and long-tailed tit. A large number of species unusual for Medelpad have been noted here over the years.
