Stortjärnberget

Several historical fires have characterized the pine forest on Stortjärnberget. The oldest pine trees on the slope have several so-called "fire wounds", stem damage caused by the heat of the fire. When damage occurs in the bark, the pines defend themselves against insect attacks by secreting resin. The resin-impregnated wood resists the ravages of time for a long time, so fire-damaged pines can live to be very old.

Another sign that the forest has burned is the presence of deciduous trees such as willow and aspen. These species are good at establishing themselves in the open environment created by a fire, but have difficulty spreading in closed forests.
