Description
The trail starts from the parking lot in Fatmomakke.
The hike starts through mountain spruce forest. Here you can see species such as Torta, Linnea and Goldenrod. It is a little hilly at the beginning but after about 2 km you come to the bridge over the black stream. The rapids under the bridge are mighty. The trail follows Rodinsbäcken which flows down into Svartbäcken. The element of mountain birch forest becomes more tangible and after further hiking you come to a suspension bridge over Rodinsbäcken - a nice place for a little rest.
The hike continues along the brook in the mountain birch forest and soon you come to Marsfjällskåtan where a magnificent view of the Marsfjäll massif opens up. Look out for old carvings in the walls of the hut from previous visitors.
From here it is about 6 km to the top of Marsfjället - the highest mountain in southern Lapland. If you are fit, you can do the whole distance in one day. If you want to take more time, it is advisable to camp somewhere below the top - and climb it the next day. Then there is the opportunity to sit and look for both arctic fox, gyrfalcon, wolverine and many other species found in the area. Remember that you must not deliberately stay closer than 100 m from a bird of prey nest or den.
To begin with, you will walk on rice and grass heaths and it is a fairly easy walk. In front of you you will always see the Marsfjället mountain massif with barren boulder fields that lack vascular vegetation. The last bit up to the top is rocky and steep. But it is absolutely worth it because once at the top (if the weather is decent of course) - you get a wonderful view.
From the ridge you can look down on steep rock faces and see extensive traces of ice river activity in the form of gullies and gravel accumulations. To the east across the high mountain plateau, you can see the wonderful spruce forests all the way down to Mörrösjöliden and the Matskan area. In clear weather you should even be able to see the church tower in Latikberg. To the west, you can see the Norwegian mountain massifs on the horizon - Börgefjäll National Park, including the peaks of Sipmeke, Jetnamen, Raines and Kvigtind. Exhilarated by your experience, the hike back to Fatmomakke will be easy.
