Description

The forest in Brännliden is one of the oldest and most pristine natural forests in northern Västerbotten, sitting like an island surrounded by large logging areas and young forests.

The reserve includes large areas of virgin coniferous forest. The area also includes smaller areas of nutrient-rich spruce forest and swamp woods. The forest has been subjected to fires, with the most recent fire occurring sometime around the start of the 19th century.

The forest is a treasure trove for those with an interest in natural forests. It gives an idea of what the surrounding forests would have looked like in the 19th century.

Brännliden a wonderful habitat for many plant and animal species that require pristine forests. There are many different wood-inhabiting fungi here. There are also plenty of mosses that require naturally forested areas. The serrate dung moss is one such species. The same applies to species such as the capercaillie, the pygmy owl, the Tengmalm’s owl and the black woodpecker.
