The virgin forest in Avaås has been affected by fires over time.
Many of the reserve’s stately, tall, old pines are more than 300 years old. The old pines have survived the fires. This is evident from the fire scarring – the damage to the bark – which can be seen on the trunks. Fire scarring can be found on both pines and spruces in this area.
