Description
In 1915, Tomas Klementsson, the administrator of the Vapsten Sami village, settled at Atoklinten on the old hunting ground. Around 1925 he built a cabin, which was a major event.
According to the 1917 Reindeer Grazing Act, it was forbidden for a nomadic Sami to erect permanent buildings within the reindeer herding area. The Lapp bailiff therefore asked Klementsson to demolish the house. He complained to the county governor, who decided that he could keep the house. The very next year, in 1928, the law was changed.
When the Klementsson family moved in 1931, the small timbered cottage became a teacher's residence. The residential school in Atoklinten was used until 1945 when the new nomad school in Tärnaby was built.
The cabin and hut are not for overnight stays. Also remember not to camp around the Ato cabin.
