Description

The first settlers arrived in Ammarnäs in the mid-1820s. In order to grow crops, it was important to avoid frost. Because the hill faces south, it acts as a heat reservoir.

The people of Ammarnäs have grown potatoes on the hill for more than 150 years. The hill is divided into different plots, and at the bottom of the hill there is a stone at each property boundary. Originally, the plots were divided up according to the size of each farmer's farm. All work, except plowing, had to be done by hand. The plow is pulled by a tractor-driven winch from the top of the hill.
