Timmeröarna, Naturreservat
- Nature reserve
- County: Värmlands län
Actions
Description
The Timmeröarna islands have distinctive archipelago environments such as reindeer-covered beach cliffs, sparse rocky pine forests and grove-like valleys. The island group is an outer outpost in the Värmland archipelago and is strongly exposed to the winds and waves of Lake Vänern.
The reserve consists of two larger islands: Timmeröarna and some smaller islets. Most of the islands are covered with lean rocky pine forest. There are several stands of large and gnarled lime trees. The extensive deciduous forest has a grove character in several places, with a lush and species-rich field layer. Landing is possible in several places thanks to good depth conditions and sheltered locations. The beach areas offer good sunbathing and swimming spots.
The reserve was established to protect the interesting natural environment and the area's excellent conditions for outdoor activities. The nature reserve is surrounded by the Värmlandsskärgårdens nature reserve, which has its own reserve regulations. The area is part of the EU's network of valuable nature, Natura 2000.
Animals and plants
The vegetation on the Timmeröarna is in places impressively rich, especially on the western, larger island where there are several stands of lime trees, some with very large and gnarled individuals. The deciduous forest contains nutrient-demanding plants such as red campion, wood anemone and viburnum. The lush vegetation is related to the rich bedrock of hyperite and amphibolite on the islands.
Birdlife is typical of the outer Väner archipelago, with gulls, terns, little auks and common loons. White-tailed eagles and ospreys occur in the area, as do skylarks, which can be seen hunting dragonflies over the islands.
Before your visit
The Timber Islands have several facilities for visitors. In addition to piers, there are several rest areas with fireplaces. We continuously replenish firewood at the fireplaces. But bring your own firewood if you want to be sure you can make a fire.
Less firewood at fireplaces
From 2023, resources have been reduced for the management of the nature reserves, which means that we have reduced the supply of firewood. Since we are now putting out less firewood, it is extra important that you as a visitor burn carefully and bring your own firewood if you want to be sure to be able to grill. Please note that fires may only be lit in the designated fireplaces and that it is forbidden to take dead or live branches from the forest.
