Näsknölen, Naturreservat

  • Nature reserve
of 5 stars

Actions

Description

The reserve was established to preserve natural old coniferous forest and coniferous swamp forest and to benefit the plants and animals that are special to these habitats.

Näsknölen is an old natural forest dominated by pine, especially in the north, but where the presence of spruce deciduous trees gradually increases towards the south. The average age of the forest is about 160 years, but the forest is both age and tree species varied and some pines are older than 200 years. Several watercourses run through the area, and in parts of the area there is moving groundwater, which contributes to a humid microclimate. The terrain is in places very rocky.

Animals and plants

The moist microclimate and the old trees make the whole area an important habitat for disadvantaged and threatened cryptogams such as lichens, fungi and mosses. Within the reserve, 16 red-listed (disadvantaged or threatened) species and 34 signal species have been found. One of the red-listed species is the three-toed woodpecker.
