Heinaho, Naturreservat

  • Nature reserve
of 5 stars

Actions

Description

There are rare lichens, mosses and fungi that thrive in the reserve's forest environment.

On the top of Mount Heinaho, the spruces have grown slowly and are short for their age. The trees grow slowly due to the altitude and northern location. The northern slope of the area is affected by the dark hyperite rock, which makes the soil nutrient-rich.

The reserve was established to preserve forests, bogs and other valuable natural environments with high biodiversity. The forest in the area is allowed to develop freely.

Animals and plants

There are many aspen trees here and the vegetation is lush. On the slope grows, among other things, torta, Lactuca alpina, which can grow to a man's height. It flowers in late summer. Unusual species such as the hanging lichen Bryoria bicolor and the violet-grey thorn lichen Bryoria nadvornikiana grow on tree branches. On tree trunks you can also find the lung lichen, Lobaria pulmonaria, and the Norwegian lichen, Platismatia norvegica, which has a blue-gray color. Dead tree trunks are good habitats for the wood fungus, Cystostereum murraii, which sometimes has a scent reminiscent of coconut.

  • Nature reserve

Facts

Established: 2013

Size: 13.5 hectares

Landowner: Private

Manager: County Administrative Board of Värmland

Directions

The reserve is located in Värmlands län, Torsby municipality, about 10 kilometers south of Bograngen. Where the highway (road 954) between Vägsjöfors and Bograngen passes the small village of Bjurberget, turn west and follow signs for Röjdåfors and Flisa (Norway). Drive through the village and turn right at signs for Falltorp and Flisa. After about 2.5 kilometers turn right onto a small forest road (second forest road on the right after the village). (From here it is about 6 kilometers to the nature reserve Dunderns parking lot.) After about 1.5 kilometers you come to a crossing where you follow the right road and continue north. In the hill up after this junction, the road is in poor condition in places. With four-wheel drive and a little higher ground clearance, it is possible to drive up, but if you have a lower car, we recommend that you park at this crossroads and walk the last bit. After about 2.5 kilometers, you pass the Gartosofta nature reserve parking lot. A little further north the road forks again, where you turn left and drive until the road ends - then you arrive at the parking lot. Even the last part of the road up to Dunderns parking lot is poorly maintained with high vegetation in the middle. From the parking lot, follow the hiking trail about 700 meters up through Dunderns nature reserve. At the crossroads on the hill, turn right and follow the old North Värmland trail for about 1.4 kilometers to the border of Heinaho Nature Reserve.
