Gartosofta, Naturreservat

  • Nature reserve

Actions

Description

The reserve consists of the naturally forested Gartosofta mountain. The name probably comes from the Finnish "bear's head". A bear's head can be seen in profile.

About 2 km to the northeast is another mountain with a natural forest reserve, Ivana. Between the mountains, the ancient "Finnskoga ice lake" had an outlet, which can be traced in special surface shapes in the area. One of these forms is the small winding ridge that, surrounded by long narrow wetlands, forms the eastern border of the reserve.

The Gartosofta reserve was established to preserve and develop natural forest structures, biodiversity and preserve geologically interesting surface forms. The area is part of the EU ecological network of protected areas, Natura 2000.

Animals and plants

The rich vegetation is due to the fact that the bedrock (hyperite) is favorable for plants. Northern and southern species grow side by side here. The northern species include, for example, torta, mountain saxifrage and mountain thornwort. The southern species include oxeye daisy, starflower and bluebell. Several orchid species have been found, including green lily and coralroot.

Arctic buzzards are found in the area and the lichen jay appears from time to time. Capercaillie and wolverine thrive in the forest, but warblers and flycatchers have also been noted.

Facilities

There is an information board at the parking lot.

There is a shorter trail of 800 m in the reserve. From Gartosofta you can reach the Ivana nature reserve via a trail about 2 km away.

Facts

Established: 2001

Size: 68 hectares

Landowner: State

Administrator: County Administrative Board of Värmland

Directions

Location: Värmlands län, Torsby municipality, 8 kilometers northwest of Bjurberget. Where the highway (road 954) between Vägsjöfors and Bograngen passes the small village of Bjurberget, turn west and follow signs for Röjdåfors and Flisa (Norway). Drive through the village and turn right at signs for Falltorp and Flisa. After about 2.5 kilometers turn right onto a small forest road (second forest road to the right after the village). (From here it is about 6 kilometers to the reserve parking.) After about 1.5 kilometers you come to a crossroads where you follow the right road and continue north. On the hill after this junction, the road is in poor condition in places. With four-wheel drive and a little higher ground clearance, it is possible to drive up, but if you have a lower car, we recommend that you park at this crossroads and walk the last bit. After about 2.5 kilometers, you will arrive at the Gartosofta Nature Reserve parking lot.
