Description
A varied and beautiful area consisting of a mosaic of forests, wetlands, lakes, ponds and streams.
Brännåsen Nature Reserve is a varied and beautiful area consisting of a mosaic of forests, wetlands, lakes, ponds and streams. The landscape is flat and the bog mosaic leaves a clear mark on the area. The area's flat-crowned old pines with crooked hanging branches are abundantly covered with twig lichen and in many places in the area there are traces of forest fires.
The reserve was established to preserve the area's mosaic of bogs and older coniferous forest. The aim is also to maintain the area's unspoiled character.
Animals and plants
The forest in the area consists mainly of natural forest-like old pine forest. The area is strongly characterized by forest fires that have produced fine old pine forests and fire stumps. Brännåsen's large area of coherent old pine is an important quality in itself, and this landscape, like few other natural pine forests in Värmland, has an internal dynamic and continuity of pine wood. The oldest forest is around 200-250 years old, but some pines are around 300 years old.
Brännåsen is home to many unusual and red-listed beetles, including the raggbok, which lives in rough, often sunlit, pine boughs. The mountain pine beetle has one of the country's strongest strongholds in Norra Ny parish. The main reason for this is the parish's unusually high density of forests with old or very old pines.
Brännåsen has a varied environment and in wetter areas the presence of late-growing spruce is more pronounced, but here too there are traces of old fires in the form of fire stumps. The area's wetter environments in combination with late-growing trees provide good conditions for cryptogams.
Outdoor life
The area, together with nearby nature reserves, is a suitable area for skiing, berry and mushroom picking, for example. The area is affected by a couple of hiking trails / herding paths that come up from Klarälvdalen and go through the area to the lakes in the east. Several snowmobile trails also run through the area.
