Brånberget, Naturreservat
- Nature reserve
- County: Värmlands län
Actions
Description
The curved birch trees and the presence of dwarf birch, as well as the bird life with species such as the lichen jay, the red grouse and the mountain finch, give Brånberget a typical northern character.
There have been several fires in the reserve and the vegetation therefore consists mostly of sparse pine forest. The eastern slope of Brånberget is dominated by spruce. Here the climate is cooler and much more humid, and the vegetation is rich in species.
The reserve was established to preserve a large contiguous area of essentially unaffected nature and habitat for flora and fauna. The area is part of the EU's ecological network of protected areas, Natura 2000.
Animals and plants
Many lichens and wood fungi that belong in untouched forests can be found here, e.g. thread cartilage lichen, lung lichen, wrinkled skin and woolly tick. Mammals such as moose, marten, hare and fox leave their calling cards in the form of droppings here and there. The large carnivores lynx, wolf and bear also roam the area, but it is rare to see them.
