Description

Ancient spruce forest with trees that are almost 300 years old.

The nature reserve was established to protect a valuable mosaic of old-growth forest and bogs. Parts of the area's bogs are relatively unaffected and are included in the bog protection plan. The forest is dominated by older spruce forest, with some parts being primeval forest. There are plenty of dead and old trees. The oldest forest stand has been measured at an average age of 270 years.

Animals and plants

With a bit of luck, visitors may be joined by the old-growth birds, the three-toed woodpecker and the lichen jay. Old and dead trees add to the diversity of the forest.

Culture

Historically, the area has been used for low-tech iron production. Björnhultet is therefore part of a larger area that is rich in ancient remains such as coal pits and iron production sites.

Facilities

Parking is available at the turnaround near Rötsjön. There is an information board at the parking lot. Rest area with shelter is in the northern part of the reserve.
