Åbengtshöjden, Naturreservat
- Nature reserve
- County: Värmlands län

Description
In this cultural landscape with an interesting forest history, several species have managed to survive on the slopes of Åbengtshöjden.
This area, rich in variety and natural values, has long been used by man. The Bergslag forests were heavily taxed to provide fuel for the metal production of the ironworks. As the forest area has been left largely untouched since coal mining ceased in 1950, traces of previous forest land use have been largely preserved. Similarly, biodiversity has persisted. This is partly because forestry has been carried out on a small scale and with varying intensity over time, partly because of the topography of the area, with difficult-to-access areas on steep slopes and large boulders, and partly because of the high soil and air humidity.
The reserve was established to conserve and develop biodiversity in a natural area with natural forests and wetlands. The area is part of the EU's Natura 2000 network of valuable nature sites.
Animals and plants
The natural forest consists of deciduous coniferous forest, where some trees are up to 250 years old. Old trees in various stages of decomposition favor many species, ranging from mosses and lichens (6 threatened species), fungi (7 threatened species) and insects to birds. It is home to many woodpecker species, including the common and three-toed woodpecker, and several owl species, such as the pearl owl and the barn owl. The area has long been known locally for its strong capercaillie population. In addition, the wolverine, red grouse, lichen jay and lesser flycatcher also contribute to the bird life.
