Description
At the highest point of Uppsalaåsen, 75 meters above sea level, there is a large open field with round stones. Almost nothing grows in the field, except for gray and yellow lichen on the stones. Perhaps you think it would look more natural if it were by the sea? That's not surprising, as this stone square, as it is called, is an old shingle beach.
6000-7000 years ago, the highest point of Uppsalaåsen was at sea level. It stood out like a lonely island. The sea was open in all directions and large waves crashed over the beaches. At that moment, the sea level stayed still for an unusually long time, neither falling nor rising. The waves washed away all the sand and mud from the top of the ridge, down to a depth of two meters. Only large rocks and boulders remained.
Viksta stentorg is now a nature reserve. It is an impressive sight to stand on the edge and look out over this large field of stone. A 200 m long path leads you from the parking lot through sparse pine forest up to the stone square.
