Smultronställe Krutudden

Krutudden is an outdoor recreation area close to the town of Östhammar, on a headland that extends out into Östhammarsfjärden. Gunpowder used to be stored here in a magazine at a safe distance from the town. The gunpowder was used in the local mines. Animals grazed on the island and, until the early 1920s, the area was regarded as outlying land. Gunpowder Island was later used as a recreational area with a swimming area and coffee shop. The small footbridge out to the island was built at the end of the 1920s; before that, the island was accessible by rowing boat or by the passenger motorboat Max.

Today's Krutudden is a lush park in summer with many types of uses such as a swimming area, exercise area and a place for music and cultural events. In winter, there are occasional ski tracks and opportunities for ice skating on the bay.

Smultronstället is a rest area located at the far end of the headland. There are coffee tables, which also work well for wheelchair users, barbecue facilities and information about the bay and life below the surface. Östhammarsfjärden has a rich bird life and the area is also important for fish as a nursery for pikeperch and pike, among others.

The nearest parking lot is at the end of Stångörsgatan. From here you walk over a bridge out to Krutudden. Wide gravel paths run along the cape, from the parking lot to the rest area is about 450 m. The last bit up to the rest area you walk on hard ground with short-cut grass. In the wooded areas to the east towards Östhammarsfjärden there is also a network of smaller paths and you can take the footpath past the campsite and the Gammelhus area out to the entrance towards Gammelhusgatan or walk the marked Hälsans stig path that leads you into Östhammar's older neighborhood.

Krutudden is one of Uppsala county's favorite spots in nature. A nature spot is an area with high natural and outdoor values that is accessible to visitors.
