Description

In the border areas between Håbo and Upplands-Bro municipalities lies a well-preserved archaeological environment. The area consists of an ancient fortress, a system of sunken lanes, and a couple of trapping pits.

The archaeological remains are situated on the eastern slope of Draget, which was historically an important waterway. The sunken lane system is an impressive network made up of several parallel paths formed over time by the wear of hooves, claws, and feet traveling through the area. It was the land uplift that created the first land strip a few hundred years before our era at the location of today’s parking lot. Shortly thereafter, the area became a passageway for travelers.

At the top of the mountain lies the ancient fortress of Skansenberget, strategically placed by Draget and the shipping lane. The name Skansen suggests that the fortress served as a defensive stronghold. The ancient fortress is bordered on the west by steep slopes and cliffs, while there are also partially steep slopes in other directions. In large parts, a clear stone wall can be seen, totaling 440 meters. This makes Skansen Fortress the largest in Upplands-Bro and one of the larger ones in the county.
