Actions

Currently

As a result of the dry summer of 2018 and the spruce bark beetle infestation, there are a lot of dead spruces in the reserve. There is a high risk of dead spruces falling and we advise you not to visit the area in windy weather.

Description

Röllingen Island is a wild island in Lake Mälaren, not far from the mainland southeast of Enköping. The island rises like a high and narrow mountain ridge out of the water. Here you can walk through old pine and deciduous forests. Stop at the old fisherman's cottage and imagine what it was like to live as a fisherman here in the 1800s. The cottage has recently been renovated and can be rented for overnight stays from summer 2017.

The island is about 50 meters high and the highest parts are quite flat. But in places it drops steeply down to Lake Mälaren. From the top you get a magnificent view of Lake Mälaren. The forest is full of both standing and lying dead trees. The trees are a paradise for lots of insects that live among the rotting wood. Many birds also thrive here, including several different types of woodpeckers such as the common crow, green wren and lesser spotted woodpecker.

In the 1800s there were two settlements on the island, Fiskartorpet and Kraftens täppa. Fiskartorpet still exists, while the houses at Kraftens täppa only remain as foundations. The last permanent residents moved from Röllingen in 1950.

There are open pastures around the fishing village. The grazing animals wander around the whole island, both in the pasture and in the forest. This benefits many species.

You can only get to Röllingen by boat. The reserve also includes the two small islets of Jutskär and Tjärskär. Remember that special rules apply in nature reserves, click on the link to the regulations to read more.
