Description

In the nature reserve Högstaåsen you can walk on the 17th century E4. Here, an unusually steep part of Uppsalaåsen rises up into the surrounding plains. The main road between Uppsala and Norrland used to run up on the dry and easily accessible ridge. Traces of the road still remain.

The ridge is made up of two more substantial hills, with a narrow, symmetrical and beautifully formed ridge at a lower level in between, called Getryggen. Such a sharp ridge shape as this ridge exhibits is unusual for Uppsalaåsen north of Uppsala. The highest point of the ridge rises about 30 meters above the otherwise agricultural landscape. There are well-designed ancient shorelines on the sides of the ridge. The forest consists of coniferous forest with old pines on the top of the ridge and pine and spruce forests on the sides. In the southern parts of the reserve there is a gravel pit that is still in operation. Open sandy areas are important for many species, such as various sand bees, bee-eaters and humpback swallows.

The reserve is about 1.5 km long, but the path that runs along the ridge continues south past Lövstalöt. There are also several other paths that criss-cross the area. Some paths are also used by cyclists.

Högstaåsen is located just over 10 km north of Uppsala, next to the old E4 road 600.

By car: From road 600, turn off just north of Lövstalöt where a sign points to football golf, at the height of a gas station. Keep left at the first junction and right at the second. The parking lot is 100m into this road, at the north-eastern edge of the reserve.

It is forbidden to enter the nature reserve:

digging, hoeing or otherwise damaging the soil surface
collect mosses, lichens or fungi, with the exception of edible fungi and single specimens for species identification
collect or remove insects or other invertebrates except for single individuals for species identification
make a fire or barbecue in a place other than that designated by the county administrative board,
drive a motorized vehicle except for driving on roads and parking lots,
set up a motorized vehicle, caravan, trailer or similar,
put up permanent markings, signs or similar, or make inscriptions
ride other than on roads or marked bridle paths,
without the permission of the County Administrative Board, use the area for organized competitions or exercises, camp activities or the like.
