Do you prefer an active holiday?
Now you can cycle parts of the Unionsleden trail from the train station in Moss to Mysen, enjoy a delicious dinner and a good night’s sleep at Scandic Brennemoen, before continuing your journey towards Ørje and back west to Askim station.
The Unionsleden from Moss to Karlstad is a newly opened 350 km signposted cycling route where nature and culture go hand in hand. If you want to experience two countries on a bike, through exciting and diverse landscapes rich in natural experiences, Unionsleden is an excellent choice. The tour starts by the Oslofjord in Moss and ends in Karlstad, located by Sweden’s largest lake, Vänern. While we wait for the border to reopen, we recommend cycling to Ørje and taking the northern route back to Askim, where you can catch the train home.
The trail is named after the union between Sweden and Norway, which lasted from 1814 to 1905. The union was formed in Moss and dissolved in Karlstad – just like the start and end points of the cycling route. Since then, our countries have remained good neighbours with plenty of cross-border exchange.
Unionsleden runs through a rolling landscape of beautiful lakes and forests. Travelling by bike gives you the time to truly take in the scenery and discover the small, unique gems along the way.
Our shared historical heritage – from the union era and other key historical events – is part of the experience. One highlight is Spydeberg Rectory, where Norway’s constitution was saved. It is also home to the best-documented 18th-century garden in the country. Other attractions, points of interest and accommodations along the trail are also highlighted.
