In the past, not everyone had access to doctors, pharmacies and medicines. Instead, people had to rely on the powers of nature. Certain springs, rocks and trees in particular were thought to have such powers. The old pine was a so-called pain tree that could be used to cure toothache, for example. The patient would poke the tooth with a stick and then insert it into the bark of the tree. The idea was that the evil would pass into the tree. Because of all the evil that had accumulated in the tree in the meantime, no one dared to put the axe in such a tree. This is the reason why we still have a number of toothache stables today.
