Description

The scenic Fullsta area is a beautiful place to hike. But keep in mind that cattle graze in the area—so please do not bring a dog into the pastures.

An Area of Great Variation

The water level in the Dalälven River is sometimes so high that large parts of the area are flooded. This can happen during the spring flood, but sometimes also in the fall. During the summer, however, water levels are low, and large parts of the areas closest to the river become dry.

This area is home to a very unusual collection of plants that are among the few capable of withstanding these significant variations. It is called “ävjebroddsvegetation,” as the most common of these species is the ävjebrodd. “Ävja” is the name for the clayey soil, and “brodd” refers to the small, stumpy plants that emerge from the ävja.

There are many other valuable plants here, such as the rare bow sedge, as well as more common species like marsh marigold and willowherb.

Beautiful and Rich in Flora and Fauna

The pastureland along the shore of Lake Bysjön is among the most valuable in Dalarna County, with great significance in terms of both flora and birdlife. The area boasts exceptional scenic beauty in its open lakeshore meadows, birch and juniper slopes, and leafy forest edges dotted with old oak trees. Parts of the pasture have a history as traditional hay meadows.

Gnats and Horseflies

If you want to get up close to lots of small animals at once, warm summer days are the best time to visit the area. That’s when there can be plenty of both midges and horseflies. Perhaps something to keep in mind if, on the contrary, you find this a bit unpleasant! You may also encounter slightly larger animals, such as grazing cattle. In that case, be sure to close any gates and avoid disturbing the animals.
