Description

The land here has been rising ever since the end of the last ice age. Pay a visit to see how this is affecting the area.

Finkarsbäcken nature reserve is located in the inner part of Tavlefjärden. The forest nearest the sea, which has only had a short time to grow after the rising of the land, is mostly home to grey alder. Grey alder is quick to colonise new areas. It takes nutrients (nitrogen) directly from the air, enabling it to grow big in a short space of time.

Further inland, where the land has been above water for longer, spruce forest and swamp take over. The ground is covered with herbs and horsetails, creating beautiful, green, flowering fields. Old grey alders, common alders and bay willows are still here from the time when this area was closer to the sea.

Tavlefjärden

Tavlefjärden is a sea inlet that is now being overgrown and turning into wetland. The inlet has been almost completely cut off. It only has contact with Outer Tavlefjärden via the narrow Knivingssundet strait. The entire northern part of Tavlefjärden is extremely shallow. With every year that passes, the land is still rising by almost a centimetre. This means that the inlet is becoming shallower and shallower very quickly.

Breeding birds

Tavlefjärden is an excellent resting and breeding location for several types of dabbling ducks, gulls and waders. The many deciduous trees in the waterside forests also provide an excellent environment for woodpeckers, and most of Västerbotten’s breeding woodpecker species have been seen here. So keep a lookout for woodpeckers in the trees.
