Tramsgrav, Naturreservat

Tramsgrav is a valley covered mainly by spruce forest on the northern slope of Dyverdalen. What is remarkable about Tramsbäcken is that springs emerge in several places throughout this beautiful and partly steep valley. The springs form a series of pools and small streams, which are clearly visible in the spring.

Biological Conservation Values

A stream (Tramsbäcken) flows from Lake Stor-Tramsen down into Dyverdalen. The forest surrounding Tramsbäcken consists mainly of spruce; the trees are tall and vary widely in diameter, ranging from slender to thick. Several trees have broad, low crowns. There are conspicuous occurrences of hanging lichens. The understory is lush with various herbs, grasses, and ferns. Old gray alders grow along the stream.

At the lake’s upper reaches, pine dominates with some aspen and willow. Along the stream valley, the forest is fully stratified. At the valley floor, there are several springs, and the air humidity is high and consistent. Traces of a forest fire are visible on trees and stumps in the higher-elevation areas. In the immediate vicinity, the forest is heavily managed. No species-specific inventory has been conducted. Among the species that have been found, however, the following can be mentioned: lungwort lichen, string lichen, violet-gray beard lichen, resin fungus, woolly fungus, sweet woodruff, spiderwort, and eyebright.

Historical and Current Land Use

Logging has taken place near Tramsbäcken. Within the reserve, there are traces of an old lumberjack’s cabin. Logging was likely limited to selective cutting. This history of land use is also evident in the presence of traces of an old horse-drawn trail. The area surrounding the reserve is characterized by rational forestry practices.

Traces of fires are visible on trees and stumps, primarily along the edges of the ravine. These fires were likely spontaneous and reflect a natural disturbance cycle. More recently, a clear-cut area was burned, and on that occasion, the fire spread into a couple of hectares of the reserve.
