Description

Öjsberget is located northeast of Malung, on the western shore of Lake Öjen. The culturally and historically significant mountain pasture Vålberget lies north of the reserve, and a hiking trail passes by the reserve. From the mountain’s summit, there is a beautiful view of the lake and the surrounding forests.

Primeval forest and mountains with beautiful views

The biological values at Öjsberget are high. They are found primarily in the old-growth forest-like section on the eastern slope and on the herb-rich northern slope, where spruce trees predominate. Around Öjsberget, there are also old pine and deciduous trees of various ages and sizes, as well as an abundance of dead trees. All of this creates the conditions for great species diversity. Öjsberget is what is known as a “southern-facing mountain.” The mountain slope retains heat, resulting in a local climate reminiscent of one found further south. From the summit, there is a beautiful view of Lake Öjen.

Scaly lichen and leather lichen

Several moister areas can be found in the undulating 100- to 150-year-old mixed coniferous forest. Öjsberget is Sweden’s richest site for pin-scarred lichen. Other interesting species noted in the area include leather lichen, wrinkled skin, and brocade lichen. Birds such as the hawk owl and the Tengmalm’s owl, as well as the three-toed woodpecker, have also been observed in the area.

Hike to the summit

The forest road leads to the Vålberget mountain pasture—take the entrance from Arvselen. From the pasture, a hiking trail passes by the nature reserve. Öjsberget offers a beautiful viewpoint. A path leads to a cliff edge with a ledge where there is currently a guestbook.
