Klostergården Tautra (The Monasary Farm)

On the Abbey Island of Tautra, in the beautiful Trondheims Fjord you will find Klostergaarden which offers a farm shop, meals, accommodation and a farm brewery, all under the same roof.

The monastery at Tautra was built as early as 1207 by Cistercian monks, and was gradually built up to become quite powerful. At its height, the monastery owned around 170 farms, some as far away as Levanger. It wasn't until the Reformation that the monastery lost its position, and the king took over the property in 1537. But the king war war driven, and soon he had to sell off farm after farm to finance the war. It did not take long before the monastery was also closed down, and without maintenance it quickly fell into disrepair.Klostergården was built in the 17th century, right next to the old monastery. The logs from the ruins that were still in good enough condition were used in the new farm building. Today, four generations live on the farm, which has been in the family's possession since 1808. The farm can accommodate a total of 130 dining guests and 23 for overnight stays. The food is made from scratch, and the farm's berries and fruit are boiled into jams and marmalades, and sold in the farm shop. Local food from all over Trøndelag is also sold there, and soaps and creams made by the nuns in the new monastery that was established on the island in 2006.There is also a brewery on the farm, which has won honors and glory for several of its brews. One of these beers, Alstadberger, is brewed according to old Stjørdals traditions with smoked, local malt. Today they brew 20 different types of beer and approx. 70,000 liters a year on the farm, which is sold at the farm, to shops around the country and to Vinmonopolet.
