Sweden’s First Episcopal Church

The 12th-Century Church

The earliest church on the site was a stave church, later replaced in the early 12th century by a Romanesque stone church with a nave and an apsidal chancel. The present tower is the oldest part of the building, constructed in the 11th century.

Inside the triumphal arch, on the northern wall, there is a medieval ambo (a type of pulpit). The baptismal font and the triumphal crucifix date from the 13th century, as does the old bishop’s chair, one of the oldest pieces of furniture in Sweden. A medieval communion window has also been preserved.

The church interior contains well-preserved medieval furnishings and ceiling paintings that can still be viewed today.

Saint Sigfrid’s Spring

Just northeast of the church is Saint Sigfrid’s Spring, traditionally believed to be the site where King Olof Skötkonung was baptised, marking an important moment in the Christianisation of Sweden.

Nearby Historical Sites

Close to the church are the ruins of a castle built around 1480 by the Bishop of Skara. Between Husaby and Forshem runs a medieval pilgrimage route that is still followed today.
