Mergölen
- Nature reserve
- County: Västmanlands län
Actions
Description
Mergölen is a forest area close to the city. There are many paths in the area and many have been trodden for many generations by local residents. However, they are not marked in nature. There is, however, a clearly marked mountain bike trail in the area that connects Mergölen with the nearby Aspenstorp nature reserve and the Sala silver mine. The mountain bike trail crosses and sometimes shares the route of the trails in the reserve. In other words, it is a place for many interests so remember to show consideration for each other.
History is always present, perhaps mainly through the mine holes and small shafts that are scattered in the area. The forest in Mergölen has mainly grown up after the operations of the Sala silver mine were phased out in the 1800s. In the area you can see traces of mining and here grows the unusual little flower halberd. In the fall, there are plenty of edible mushrooms here.

The Mergölen nature reserve is located about 3 kilometers southwest of the center of Sala, near the Sala silver mine. There are several different routes you can choose to get into the area. For example, you can choose to cycle or walk via one of the roads and paths that start from the Sala silver mine. Or you can approach the area from Finntorpsvägen. Finntorpsvägen runs through the reserve area and can either be reached from the south via Västeråsleden (follow signs for Finntorpet) or from the north via Fagerstavägen (follow signs for Mergölen). The reserve's car park is located along Finntorpsvägen and from here you can reach Mergölen's large trail system.
