Description
Centuries-old spruces and pines are preserved in Kvarnbergets nature reserve.
The forest contains many spruces and some pines that are between 200 and 300 years old.
Kvarnberget Nature Reserve is located on the border with Dalarna, east of Västra Näsberget, a village that has been permanently inhabited since the mid-17th century. The reserve is located on an east-facing slope and the lower parts of the slope contain swamp forest environments. About half of the area is old forest, the rest is marshland.
The reserve was established to preserve and develop a valuable coniferous forest area with adjacent marshland, and together with the surrounding forests to preserve animals and plants. The reserve is also intended to be a resource for outdoor recreation, as long as it does not compromise the values that the area is intended to protect.
Animals and plants
There are always a few spruce trees in the area that are infested with bark-dwelling insects, so there is always access to nutritious larvae for the three-toed woodpecker to find and peck out. Twelve red-listed species have been noted in the area.
