Håltebyns brandfält, Naturreservat
- Nature reserve
- County: Värmlands län
Actions
Description
The reserve was created after a forest fire in 1994.
The fire was very intense and large areas of mineral soil have been exposed. Most of the trees were extensively damaged by the fire, and a large part of the roots were burnt off close to the trunk. As a result, most of the trees died quite immediately and have gradually fallen over. 22.5 hectares of the reserve's 32 hectares are burnt land. After a forest fire, many insects find new habitats such as newly dead burnt trees, dead wood or burnt ground. This in turn is of great importance for insectivorous birds, such as the lesser spotted woodpecker, the three-toed woodpecker and the grey woodpecker. Nowadays, fires are rare in forests, making the resulting firebreaks extremely valuable.
The reserve was established to conserve a firebreak and species associated with a fire-prone forest ecosystem and its habitats. The area is part of the EU's Natura 2000 network of protected areas, and the EU's Life-Nature fund has part-financed the information and protection of this Natura 2000 site.

Directions
The reserve is located in Värmlands län, Årjäng municipality, about 6.5 kilometers northeast of Karlanda church, the elevated area immediately west of Håltebyn. Exit the E18 in Årjäng and drive north on road 172 towards Vännacka. Once in Vännacka (about 18 kilometers), turn left on road 177. After about 3.5 kilometers on it, turn left again, onto a gravel road with a sign for "Håltebyn". Follow the "main road" west through Håltebyn, and after about 4 kilometers the road splits at the southern tip of Lake Rinnens. Keep left here, and after 400 meters turn left again. Follow this last stretch for just under 3 kilometers to the end of the road, and park at the turnaround located in Fjornshöjden nature reserve (about halfway into this last stretch of road, there is a turnoff to the right, but you should not turn in there). NOTE! The road may sometimes be closed with a barrier.
