Norra Ripa Sandar, Naturreservat

  • Nature reserve
of 5 stars

Actions

Description

In Norra Ripa sandar you will find open, dry pastures and lush coastal meadows and swamp forest along Helgeå. The sandy soil is rich in lime in places. This is reflected in a large number of flowers and many insects and fungi. You will find Norra Ripa sands half a mile west of Åhus.

Species-rich sandy soils on Kristianstadslätten

Norra Ripa sandar is located on Kristianstadslätten, five kilometers west of Åhus and two kilometers north of Ripa village. The reserve area is dominated by open, poor sandy soils, but also by lush wet meadows and swamp forest in the low-lying parts along the Helge å river. The sandy soil also contains lime. This is reflected in an unusually high species diversity of flowers, insects and fungi.

Old field that is now grazed

The dry, sandy soil is rich in lime in places but poor in other important plant nutrients. This is reflected in the low yields of older arable farming. The fields also needed to lie fallow for long periods. No crops were grown at all. Instead, the land was used as pasture.

Rye was a common crop in the old fields. But buckwheat and potatoes also grew here. Nowadays, a lot of vegetables are grown on the sandy farmland of Kristianstadslätten.

Lush floodplains along the River Helge å

The riparian areas along Helgeå in the west are more fertile thanks to the fertilization that comes with the spring winter floods. These naturally fertilized areas have traditionally been used mainly for haymaking and grazing. Nowadays, these wet meadows are also grazed throughout the season.

Outdoor recreation

The area lacks trails, outdoor facilities and parking, but it is possible to roam freely in the open, sandy pastures. Remember to take your trash home.
