Description

Pestbacken is a 10 to 15 meter high and about 800 m long flying sand dune located about 1 km south of Gualöv. It is probably formed around a rice field in the border between open land and forest. As a geological formation, it is young, formed during historical times and first reported on a map from 1700.
Pestbacken is today overgrown with pine forest. The field layer includes linden, spiderwort, yarrow and green pyrola. The name Pestbacken is considered to be related to the last plague that raged in the early 1700s. About 200 meters north of the dune is an old plague cemetery.
