Brotorpet, Naturreservat

The reserve is located in an area rich in lakes and is known as "southern Sweden's last wilderness". Immeln and the adjacent lakes are popular with canoeists and anglers. In Brotorpet, the trees are allowed to die of old age and therefore there are many fallen tree trunks next to the hiking trail. The lakes belong to the realm of the osprey and the guillemot, and on spring evenings and nights the latter's melancholy song resounds over the water.

Avoid crowds on weekends

The parking lot and access points are often full during weekends. Perhaps cycle here or take a long walk through the area? Congestion is greatest at entrances and adjacent picnic areas.

Old trees that bring life

In Brotorpet Nature Reserve, trees are allowed to die of old age. That's why there are many fallen tree trunks next to the hiking trail, far more than in the managed forest outside the nature reserve. The decaying logs become food for a variety of insects. These are in turn eaten by woodpeckers and other birds. Listen and look out for the tawny owl and wood pigeon - two of the forest's more unusual inhabitants. Several rare lichens and fungi also live in the old forest.

Along the shores of Immeln

The lakes are also home to the common guillemot and osprey. In late spring evenings and nights, the melancholic song of the guillemot echoes over the water. Both the common guillemot and the osprey are sensitive to disturbance and leave their nests when people come near. Therefore, avoid disturbing them.

Edre stream

Lakes Immeln and Filkessjön are linked by Edre ström. The large Immeln trout spawns in the flowing water. The Immelnöring is a unique, downstream-spawning strain of trout.

Outdoor life

There is a prepared campsite on the banks of the River Immeln with shelters, fireplaces, toilets and drinking water. Remember to bring charcoal if you are going to barbecue and to take your rubbish home. The campsite is located on a fine sandy beach that invites you to paddle and cool off. Welcome to Brotorpet Nature Reserve

It is located along the shores of Lake Immeln. Here you'll find old beech forest, where the trees are left to die naturally. Old and dead trees provide food for a large number of insects, which in turn become food for woodpeckers and other birds. Brotorpet is situated in an area with many lakes, sometimes called "the last wilderness in southern Sweden". Lake Immeln and the adjacent lakes are popular among canoeists and anglers. The lakes also belong to black-throated diver and osprey. The melancholic call of the black-throated diver can be heard over the water in late spring evenings and nights. Both black-throated diver and osprey are sensitive to disturbances and leave their nests when humans approach. Therefore, avoid disturbing them in their nesting sites.

Regulations

Within the grounds of the reserve it is forbidden to:

• damage fixed natural objects or surface formations,
• put up tents or lights fires outside designated areas,
• pick, dig up or in any other way damage plants or wood-living fungi,
• deliberately break off or collect and take away or burn dead wood,
• deliberately disturb or influence animal life,
• bring dogs or other pets unless on a leash,
• put up notice boards, signs, posters, paper strips or similar, or make inscriptions - with the exception of information and reserve signs, or boundary markers.

Without permission from the County Administrative Board it is furthermore forbidden to:

• collect invertebrates, e.g. beetles or molluscs.
