Description

In Ånnarote Nature Reserve, a species-rich ancient forest is protected for the future. Here you will find large pines, late-growing spruces and many small bogs, as well as a variety of mosses, lichens and fungi that have difficulty surviving in today's production forests.

Species-rich mire edges

The terrain in Ånnarote nature reserve is slightly hilly and covered by an older spruce forest with elements of old pines. Between the hills you will find small tree-covered bogs. The transitions between forest and bog are exciting and rich in species. Orchids such as maidenhair fern and coral root grow here, as well as lichens such as border lichen, yellow needle lichen, cat's foot lichen and yarn lichen. Yarn lichen is a yellowish-gray hanging lichen that usually grows on tree branches.

Underground streams

Two streams run from Tjuramossen and Ånnarotes marsh through the slope down to Bocksbosjön south of the reserve. Both streams are largely hidden underground, but are clearly visible as the vegetation is richer along the streams, with large spruces, coarse deciduous trees and plants such as the sundew.

Old natural forest

The forest in the reserve has been allowed to develop in peace for about 100 years and is beginning to have clear features of natural forest with trees of different ages. The oldest spruces are almost 150 years old and there are plenty of gaps. There is also a good supply of dead, decaying trees and tree parts to the delight of a wide range of fungi, mosses and insects. Among the fungi, we find the woolly tick and the starry thorn. Wood-boring insects attract woodpeckers and other birds. If you are lucky, you may spot the rare three-toed woodpecker here.

Traces of coal production

Not far from here is the old ironworks in Bocksboda. Iron production required large quantities of charcoal. The forests in the area were probably heavily used for charcoal cutting. In the reserve there are several remains of coal mines, known as coal beds.

Accessibility

There are no marked trails in the reserve, so you can explore the nature on your own. Close to the parking lot near the lake there is a picnic area with the possibility to grill.

Is there firewood?

Firewood is available at the fireplace. Remember to burn in moderation, so that the wood is enough for future guests. The firewood is replenished regularly, but we cannot guarantee availability at all times. If you want to be sure to be able to make a fire - bring your own firewood. It is not allowed to burn sticks and branches from the forest in the reserve.
