Description
The area surrounding the square can be described as a knowledge quarter,
where visitors can trace the development of education over more than 135 years.
The Back School was built in 1890, while the Green School, located in front of
it, was built between 1904 and 1905. Both buildings originally served as
primary schools.
On the opposite side of the square stands the Central
School, which today houses the Gällivare Museum of Culture. This school,
serving pupils in the lower and middle years of compulsory education, was in
use from 1913 to 1982. Behind it is Gällivare's modern upper secondary school,
the Knowledge Centre (Kunskapshuset).
