Description
The open land around Hovs Gård is about 80 hectares and consists of
arable land and pastures mixed with shrubbery and marshy areas. To the north
there are bogs and to the south is the reed-rich Lake Garen with quagmire,
which is difficult to control nowadays[LW1]. It is most easily approached
from either the eastern or southern side. In 2010, a dam of about 3 hectares
was constructed in the northern part of Hovs Gård and in 2013-2014, more dams
were constructed to the west and south of the farm.
The northern wryneck, red-backed shrike, whinchat, northern wheatear,
skylark and curlew all thrive and breed here. The western brown harrier can be
seen closest to Garen, and in the dams, lapwings and common swans thrive. At
Garen, you’ll regularly see water rail and occasionally you can hear spotted crake
playing. Tundra swans, greater white-fronted geese, barnacle geese, little
grebes, gadwalls, little ringed plovers, spotted redshanks and common
greenshank have been noted amongst the birds that rest in the dams. During the
winter, great grey shrike are regularly seen.
The
southern dam is marked on the map.
