Description

Gussjövallsberget Nature Reserve consists of old coniferous forest with very high natural values. Storms Dagmar and Ivar, which hit in 2011 and 2013 respectively, felled many trees in the area. It can therefore be difficult and dangerous to get through parts of the reserve. The area is located 11 kilometers northwest of Hennan and covers 59 hectares. Mostly spruce forest grows in the area, but in the eastern part there is a large proportion of deciduous trees. In the steepest parts there are smaller pine-dominated areas with very old trees. In recent times, many trees have blown down, which will benefit many woody species.

Valuable for many

A large number of unusual plants, fungi and lichens have been found within the nature reserve. Examples of these species are black witch hazel, patchy thistle, spotted spurge, scented skin and lung lichen.

They thrive here because the forest is old and rich in dead trees on which fungi and lichens grow. There are many vascular plants growing in the leafy parts of the area.

Animals in Gussjövallsberget

Insects lay eggs in the rotten wood. The larvae develop in the wood, sometimes for several years, before a new insect is ready.
