Description
Norrbärke church is a church in Smedjebacken and is the parish church for Norrbärke parish in Västerås diocese.
The church was built in the 1400s, most of what is visible today, however, is from between 1661 - 1724.
Norrbärke Church has medieval origins. A document shows that the church in 1352 is described as simply "the chapel". It was probably a simple wooden chapel. Experts believe that the nave of the church is the oldest part, which was built sometime during the late 14th century or early 15th century. The renovation of the church began in 1661 and continued until 1724, when the church had largely taken its final form. The bell tower was moved to the 44.5m high church tower in 1865. The expansion of the side naves began in 1704. This expansion took two decades because the new side naves collapsed in 1708 due to faulty construction.
Next to the church there is a tin box with pilgrim passports and pilgrim stamps for those walking the St Olav Rombo Way pilgrimage trail.
