Trees have always been important to humans and some of our earliest laws protected a number of tree species. Trees have provided us with food, fodder for our animals, firewood and timber for tools, housing and boat building. Many of our animal, fungal and plant species live or seek food in and on trees; an old hollow oak can be home to up to 1500 different species. In Sweden we have 30 naturally occurring tree species.
