Stavsbjär, Naturreservat

  • Nature reserve
of 5 stars

Actions

Description

Stavsbjär is a hilltop covered with old beech forest. The forest is rich in plant and animal life with many rare species. From the top of the cliff you have a view of the Fylleån valley and the Svarta klippan reserve to the east.

On the mountain slope to the east there are precipices with large boulders and vertical cliffs. In the highest parts of the reserve, old beech forest grows with plenty of dead and dying trees in the form of high stumps, flames and dry branches.

Many rare mosses

A large number of rare mosses and lichens have been found on both dead and living trees. Many of the organisms have high demands on their environment. Old forest, dead wood and high humidity are some of the conditions. The large, beautiful lung lichen grows here, as well as beech spring lichen, olive sclerotia lichen, barley band moss and beech feather moss. Many snails also thrive in the moist environment, such as various types of coil snails.

Food for birds of prey

Stavsbjär is home to the beaver hawk, a rare bird in Sweden that prefers forests with plenty of deciduous trees. The young of the buzzard are almost exclusively reared on wasp larvae and pupae.
