Porsbjär, Naturreservat

Porsbjär is part of a large area of moorland in south-east Halland. Large, wide bogs and small wooded areas offer the visitor magnificent nature with exciting plant and animal life. Feel free to follow one of our nature trails. At Porsbjär you can experience real wilderness!
Porsbjär's bog complex is today perceived as a vast wilderness. But this has not always been the case. The area was used by humans in the past and was deforested early on. Heather and small woods were burned at regular intervals to improve animal grazing. In some of the wetlands, farmers cut marsh hay. At the beginning of the 20th century, it became increasingly unusual to see clouds of smoke rising from the moors; instead, the forest had begun to sprout on the mainland islets.

Learn more on the nature trails

Today, the forested areas stand out like islands in the otherwise vast sea of moorland. In many places, it has been a long time since anyone cut down the forest. The land has not been drained and the forests are therefore swampy and wild. In Porsbjär there are two signposted nature trails where you can learn more about the history and culture of the place. Small educational signs about Porsbjär's nature are posted along the trail. One loop starts from the southern part of the reserve and the other from the middle. The loop in the southern part is 1.2 km and the northern part is 2.8 km.

Camping is allowed for one night in the reserve in accordance with the right of public access.

Collect stamps

In some of our most attractive reserves, you can also collect a nice stamp when you visit the reserve. You stamp either directly in your guidebook or on your own paper/book. In Porsbjär, the stamp can be found at the old meadow barn on the southern nature trail.

Storms have left their mark

The forest is mainly dominated by spruce trees, but there are also plenty of pine trees in places. Storms Gudrun and Per left behind a number of spruce "breasts". Among the dead trees, you can now see deciduous trees shooting up towards the sky. Moose are usually good at grazing the leaves in the area, but here they cannot reach the desirable plants. Stormfalls are an example of how gaps are created in the forest where other tree species have a chance to grow up for a while without fierce competition from spruce. Keep in mind that it can be dangerous to be near the rootwads. Follow the cleared paths.

Yellow flowers on the bog

Many interesting plants grow in reserves. In July, the marsh lily blooms and in several places it forms wide, yellow fields. In August to September you have the chance to see the bright blue flower of the bell gentian. Here you will also find the strongly scented shrubs water primrose and pine, as well as dwarf birch, which is usually associated with the mountains. The vast mires are also home to many bird species. In the silence of the mire, you can hear the wistful song of the heath pipit in spring, the light whistling of the greenfinch and the shrill trumpet fanfares of the crane.
