Berg-Annas berg, Naturreservat

Berg-Anna’s Hill consists of steep slopes covered with numerous dead trees, both standing and fallen, drier areas with old pine trees, and at the bottom, a lovely stream flows through the area. This means that a variety of coniferous forest habitats can be found within a small area.

Natural values known for a long time

​The natural values of this area have been known to landowners for a long time. In 1990, the area’s natural values were described in a document detailing the landowner’s designated conservation areas (the original area does not have exactly the same boundaries as the newly established reserve). Thanks to this attention, Berg-Anna’s Mountain was designated by the County Administrative Board in 2005 to be included in the Natura 2000 network—an ecological network of valuable natural areas within the EU. And in 2017, the area was also designated a nature reserve with the state as the landowner.

Knärot and Lumber

Berg-Annas Berg is a diverse coniferous forest area. In the moist parts, spruce predominates. Here you can also find the small, inconspicuous orchid known as knärot. In the drier areas, there is a greater proportion of pine. The forest is rich in blueberry bushes, with patches of heather and lingonberries. Along the stream, there are areas with abundant club mosses and ferns.

Forest with steep slopes and many dead trees

The forest consists mainly of an older mixed spruce and coniferous forest and smaller areas of pine. Where the slope is steepest, there are large quantities of dead trees that create a lot of dead wood. The wood consists of dead trees of many different sizes and at various stages of decomposition. This benefits many rare species, such as the patchy polypore, wrinkled skin, violet mussel, and wood staircase moss. Most of the trees are between 100 and 200 years old, but there are a few old and massive pines approaching 300 years of age. Especially in the southwestern part, at the very top of the reserve, there are several very large and old pines.

Visitor Information

The area is fairly accessible, as Finnkölsvägen runs just north of the nature reserve. To visit the reserve, you can turn off the road between Vintjärn and Svartnäs, heading west toward Långfäbodarna. Please note that the road is closed with a barrier during the spring thaw and when road conditions are poor. Just past Åkroksmyren, there is a turning area where you can park at the side. An old dirt road leads up to the reserve, and the reserve sign is located about 50 meters south of the parking area.

Otherwise, there are no facilities for visitors in the reserve.
