Description

Sternö is home to Blekinge's largest burial cairn.

During the Bronze Age (1500-500 BC), the practice of throwing earth or stones over the dead was introduced in Sweden. At the beginning of the Bronze Age, the deceased were buried in a hollowed-out tree trunk without being burned, but at the end of the period it became the custom to burn the dead. The ashes were placed in a clay urn, which was then covered with stone or earth.

Bronze tools and jewelry were often placed in the grave. The Bronze Age grave at Högarör is covered with stone, probably taken from nearby shingle fields.

For our sun-worshipping Bronze Age ancestors, it must have been a breathtaking view from the site, which is 53 m above sea level. As the cairn is quite large (5 meters high and 30-40 m in diameter), it may have been the burial place of a great Bronze Age man.
