Runic inscription with the signature Södermanland 344.

Runic script: x auþbiarn x auk x sigbiarn x kuþbian x þaiR x byþr x litu x hakua x stain x þinsa x eftiR x biurn x fnþur x sin -ystain Nusvenska: Ödbjörn and Sigbjörn and Gudbjörn, the brothers, had this stone carved after Björn, their father. Östen (carved).

The carving, which was created in the 11th century, is placed by the sea route from Södertälje towards Lake Mälaren so that it would be clearly visible to passing sailors. The runes are therefore unusually large to be read from the lake.

A rune carving was expensive to make and a status symbol of the time. The text spread honor over the family. This carving could be read for many generations by those who traveled by boat to and from Södertälje and on to Uppsala, Sigtuna, Adelsö and other places around Lake Mälaren.
