Description

The harbor between Skepps-och Kastellholmarna has a very exciting history as the limited area of the harbor is one of the most wreck-dense areas in the country. Wrecks from the first half of the 17th century to the 19th century lie on the seabed. In addition, there are remains of former bridges and piers, as well as cultural layers that reflect the activities on land and at sea over the centuries. For example, there are medicine bottles on the seabed outside the naval hospital that was located on Kastellholmen in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Several of the shipwrecks were part of the foundations of a bridge that ran diagonally across the area and formed an outer boundary to this port, including for galleys. Even in the first half of the 19th century, galleys were moored inside the harbor when they were not stored in their sheds at Galärvarvet on Södra Djurgården. Diving is prohibited in the area and is protected as a permanent ancient monument.

An earlier name for Kastellholmen was Notholmen, which indicates that this fishing method was used there. The name Kastellholmen derives from the castle that was built on the island in the 1660s. Before that, the island was known collectively as Skeppsholmen after the navy moved from Blasieholmen in the 1640s, and as Notholmen or Lilla Beckholmen (also Gamla Beckholmen). After the first castle was built, which was actually a simple fort, the island was called Skans- or Blockhusholmen.
